I really enjoyed this movie the most so far from the past films we have watched. I think I really enjoyed how the women in the movie were the strong characters that eventually were the heroes at the end. The character that really stood out to me was Lisa. In the beginning of the film Lisa was depicted and illustrated as the “it” girl. As if she was only good for her looks and beauty throughout town, as if that is how she got so far throughout her career. This is not surprising due to the way Lisa looks and dresses, but she turned out to be much more than just that. Throughout the film, men constantly undermine Lisa because of her femininity. For example, Jefferies, someone she was in love with, is the one who at first undermines her, then realizing everything she is. Realizing she is the significantly capable one, the one who was brave and courageous as well as determined to get something. She is also undermined by Detective Doyle. Who looks to her as if she is there on call for Jefferies and there for the service of Jefferies and Doyle. I believe Detective Doyle sees Lisa as a sex piece, which would very well go along with that time frame. I’m truly surprised that a film released in 1954 would have a character such as Lisa. Halfway through the film, you see Lisa for the woman she is and the woman she wants to be seen as, as well as getting that idea through Jefferies and the audience. The very last scene of the movie you see Lisa reading a book on the Himalayas, trying to show Jefferies her effort and shared interest, but as soon as she falls asleep she switches back to her magazine. I’m not sure how to feel about this scene because I don’t know if the movie is depicting that she is scared to be who she truly is because of a fear of losing Jefferies or that she is standing by her interests and is not willing to completely lose herself hoping Jefferies could accept that. Throughout the movie, there is a very progressive idea of women until that last scene. In the end, if it was not for Lisa, Thorwald would have never been caught. The audience of that time frame might have seen Jefferies as the hero, but the truth is, he was trapped in a wheelchair incapable of acting on this murder. He was incapable, allowing Lisa to be the true hero of the film. By the end of the film, Lisa is depicted as a smart, tough and resourceful woman that no one expected her to be. She absolutely stood out to me out of all the characters by far.
